Durban Sand Castle Contest: Oh Yes, You Heard Right.

I’m so convinced this is what Street Scene Tours‘ to-do lists look like.

  • Start most authentically alternative tour company in Durban. Jip, check.
  • Create an annual city-wide design comp and lifestyle event called Interpret Durban. Check.

and now…

  • Think out the box and start a one-of-a-kind Sand Castle Contest… and that’s a check.
Check this out ekse…

This is really happening. You are not imagining it.

Durban’s beachfront has always been a haven for families, friends and solo sun bathers alike.

In the last ten years, the sand castles of old have had a facelift. Silhouettes of numerous of the city’s landmarks such as the Moses Mabhida stadium, next to life size interpretations of our local animal life from crocodiles to lions, as well as any subject topical at the time from Amy Winehouse to the Rugby World Cup, have all appeared built out of sand on our beachfront.
These sand castles have become synonymous of our city’s coastline, and have been a huge part of a process that has seen Durban’s beachfront become a visual treat.

As a tribute to this process, Street Scene in conjunction with East Coast Radio’s Funsunzi campaign presents the 1st annual Durban Sandcastle Contest which will be held on Saturday the 1st of October; a celebration of Durban’s beachfront: friends, family, sand and sun.

This event will be the largest competition of its sort that KZN has ever seen, with 100 designated plots on Durban’s New Beach.

Entry into the competition is free, but is limited to the available plots.
In the region of 450 participants are expected for the event, categories include: professionals, amateurs and children.

Join Street Scene and East Coast Radio in a Funsunzi day on Saturday October 1st 2011 for a Sandcastle Competition like no other.

Registration will commence at 8am and the competition will run from 9am – 2pm.

Prizes, from proudly Durban initiatives, are up for grabs for the top 3 finalists in each of the 3 categories.

Street Artists, an MC and music shall provide the backdrop along with the gently crashing waves of the Indian Ocean.

For more information or to secure your plot, email, call 031 368 5909 or check out the Facebook page.

Be there, I have no doubt the weather is going to be awesome.
Before I go, I’ll leave you with some photos of what we could be in store for. These photos were taken of submissions at last years sand castle comp in Oregon, USA – they’re epic… but my life in the ever-alive country of South Africa has taught me that when we’re on on fire we’re only about 10 types of more creative than the yanks.

I’m too keen. See ya at New Beach. (If you’re that way inclined, you might also want to follow our daily twitter surf report on @zero31surf)
